Happy Memorial Day Weekend, everyone! The celebrations kick off on Friday and continue through Monday, as we pay tribute to those who have lost their lives serving in the U.S. military while also signaling the unofficial beginning of summer. The weather is warming up, with grills lighting and drinks being popped open. It’s a quieter time for UK Athletics, but a lively one everywhere else.
We’re here to keep you updated on UK Athletics while you enjoy the festivities. After a busy Thursday, leading into another eventful Friday, let’s review some key highlights.
Mark Pope’s Interview on KSR Was a Success
It was a significant day at KSR, filled with content from Mark Pope’s hour-long interview with Matt Jones. They covered a range of topics, including Pope’s inaugural year in Lexington, team history, missed championship opportunities, scheduling, Travis Perry’s exit, incoming recruits, the rivalry with Louisville, and more.
Did you know John Calipari warned him not to disrupt the culture he had built over 15 years at Kentucky?
“Cal is down there at Arkansas, he’s like, ‘Don’t you ruin my program. Man, that’s the best program in all of basketball,’” recalled Pope during their conversation.
Braydon Hawthorne Joins Kentucky
Shortly after Pope’s interview, he announced the signing of his newest four-star recruit, Braydon Hawthorne. The 6-8 standout from West Virginia committed to Kentucky on Tuesday and signed with the Wildcats on Thursday.
His coach is enthusiastic about his potential. “Braydon Hawthorne probably has the highest growth potential in the class of 2025,” said Pope. “He’s a quick learner with a 4.0 GPA and exceptional skills. His upside is remarkable, and he’s eager to compete and improve every day.”
Jaland Lowe Withdraws from NBA Draft
Fans worried that Jaland Lowe, Kentucky’s likely starting point guard, might leave for the NBA after a standout performance at the G League Elite Camp can relax. The Pittsburgh transfer announced he would withdraw from the draft ahead of the May 28 deadline to play for the Wildcats in the 2025-26 season.
“Can’t miss out on this opportunity,” he posted. “See you soon, BBN.”
Jayden Quaintance Starts Rehab in Lexington
As the roster for the 2025-26 season takes shape, one key player is already in Lexington getting a head start. Reports indicate that Jayden Quaintance, arriving for his official visit, is also moving in to begin his Wildcat career.
Following surgery to repair a torn ACL, the Arizona State transfer is eager to start rehab early in hopes of being ready for the November season. He began working with the strength and conditioning staff at UK facilities on Thursday, with family present for his first rehab session.
Bat Cats Await NCAA Tournament Fate
Entering the NCAA Tournament Selection Show, Kentucky is in a precarious position after losing four consecutive games, including a disappointing sweep at Vanderbilt and an early exit from the SEC Tournament. They were close to securing a bid but now must wait until Monday to learn their fate.
Thursday’s loss to No. 14 seed Texas A&M, who defeated Auburn and Mississippi State, adds pressure. The Aggies need to win their upcoming games to surpass Kentucky, who has a higher RPI.
Currently projected as a No. 3 seed in the Clemson Regional, the Bat Cats are now relying on the selection committee. Fans should root for No. 3 seed LSU to prevent any surprises in Hoover this Friday.
OKC and SGA Advance as KAT Seeks Victory
Fresh off earning the league MVP title, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 38 points in a 118-103 win, putting them ahead 2-0 in the Western Conference Finals. Meanwhile, Karl-Anthony Towns and the Knicks aim to even the series in the Eastern Conference Finals after a rough outing against Indiana.
Tonight’s game will tip off at Madison Square Garden at 8 PM ET on TNT.
Enjoy the beginning of your weekend, everyone! Happy Memorial Day!
