Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value has garnered enthusiastic reviews following a record-setting 15-minute standing ovation at its world premiere at Cannes.
Director Joachim Trier, one of the last to present in this year’s main competition, is receiving tremendous feedback for his film Sentimental Value, which features stars like Stellan Skarsgård, Elle Fanning, and his frequent collaborator Renate Reinsve. The narrative centers on a dysfunctional Norwegian family and is now a strong contender for the prestigious Palme d’Or award.
At a press conference, actor Stellan Skarsgård humorously explained his hoarse voice was due to the festivities following the premiere. The cast and crew had ample reason to celebrate, as the film was met with a standing ovation longer than any seen in competition at Cannes this year, surpassing even Bong Joon Ho’s acclaimed Parasite.
While the final decision lies with the International Jury, the film has potential to resonate with both art-house audiences and commercially, akin to last year’s winner, Sean Baker’s Anora. During the conference, Elle Fanning wore a T-shirt referencing “Joachim Trier Summer,” celebrating the director’s culture amidst the festival buzz.
Set in a beautiful historical residence in Oslo, Sentimental Value tells the story of an estranged father, played by Skarsgård, and his daughters. Gustav Borg, who hasn’t made a film in years, strives to reconnect with his daughter Nora by writing a script for her, leading to interactions with a young Hollywood actress played by Fanning.
Critics are already labeling Sentimental Value as potentially the best film of the year. The movie has secured distribution rights in the U.S. with Neon, a company known for its successful picks like Parasite and Titane. Regardless of its outcome at Cannes, involvement in the festival historically enhances a film’s chances in the wider awards season.
