Tragic Incident at Moore Park Beach
The father of a three-year-old girl, allegedly killed by her mother, has hurried home to support his family during this tragic time. Jai Ruane, a mine worker and MMA fighter, is now with his other two children, aged one and two, who were at home when the horrifying event unfolded.
Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, 32, was discovered near her deceased daughter, Sophia, outside their residence in Moore Park Beach, near Bundaberg, Central Queensland. Despite the efforts of emergency services to revive her, police confirmed that Sophia had sustained multiple stab wounds and could not be saved.
In a statement to Nine News, Mr. Ruane described his daughter Sophia as “the light of his life.” He shared fond memories of her, stating, “Always smiling, always wanting to help — just full of life and love.” He emphasized that Sophia had a “huge heart.”
Acting Superintendent Brad Inskip reported that Mr. Ruane was at work when the incident occurred but has since returned home to be with his children. Inskip noted that Mr. Ruane was devastated by the tragic event, adding, “It was a horrific scene.” He remarked on the emotional toll it has taken on witnesses and emergency responders involved.
Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 4:45 PM following multiple reports from concerned neighbors. They found Sophia unresponsive with several wounds and pronounced her dead at the scene. A weapon was reportedly located at the site, leading to the arrest of Flanigan, who has since been charged with murder.
Investigations are ongoing, and Acting Superintendent Inskip mentioned that authorities would examine Flanigan’s mental health history as part of their inquiries. The family and their background with police and child protection services are also under scrutiny.
Flanigan, who was active on social media about her faith and family values, shared various posts about overcoming challenges, aiming to create lasting memories with her children. She appeared in court on Tuesday without having to attend personally, and her case has been adjourned until July 21, with no bail application made by her legal counsel.
