Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has reportedly opted out of a tournament due to new mandatory “gender tests” imposed by World Boxing.
Khelif’s Controversial Spotlight
The boxer has been at the center of intense scrutiny regarding her sex, especially during the 2024 Paris Olympics, where she faced accusations from numerous public figures alleging she might be male. This controversy reignited following the resurfacing of a 2023 chromosome test indicating an XY karyotype.
Skipping the Eindhoven Tournament
Khelif decided against competing in the upcoming tournament in the Netherlands following World Boxing’s recent testing mandate for athletes. Despite her intention to return to the ring at the Hotel Eindhoven tournament, she missed the registration deadline set shortly after the announcement of the new requirements.
Mayor’s Criticism of Mandatory Tests
Mayor of Eindhoven, Jeroen Dijsselbloem, strongly opposed these tests, deeming them discriminatory. In a letter to the Dutch and International Boxing Federations, he emphasized the importance of inclusivity in sports and urged for Khelif’s participation.
Renewed Scrutiny and Medical Reports
Khelif’s withdrawal comes amidst ongoing scrutiny regarding her eligibility, fueled by alleged sex-test results from the 2023 World Championships. Journalist Alan Abrahamson noted that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) had received warnings about Khelif’s DNA suggesting a “male” profile over a year ago. A recently published medical report described her chromosome structure as “abnormal,” indicating an XY pattern typical for males.
Disqualification and Defense by IBA
In 2023, Khelif was disqualified from the Women’s World Boxing Championships just before the gold medal match due to concerns over her eligibility. The International Boxing Association (IBA) justified this decision as essential for maintaining fairness in competition after two gender verification tests were conducted.
Khelif’s Affirmation of Identity
Throughout these disputes, Khelif has consistently identified as female, even taking legal action against social media critics. She expressed her determination to compete in future Olympic Games and clarified that recent transgender policies do not pertain to her identity as she has always considered herself a girl.
