Ben Tenzer’s Journey to the Nuggets’ Front Office
Ben Tenzer spent so much time at his friend’s house that it felt like a second home by his high school years. Whenever he returned home, his parents would ask about his day, leading to surprising responses.
“Oh, it was fun,” Tenzer would say, with his dad, David, recalling how their conversations often included names like Jason Giambi. Tenzer’s closest friend, Michael Tellem, is the eldest son of NBA and MLB super-agent Arn Tellem, making Tenzer and his friends feel like family amidst the sports elite.
From being a wide-eyed teen around famous athletes to working as an intern for the Nuggets, Tenzer’s ascent in the Denver front office was a result of years of keen observation and a willingness to take on various roles. Recently, he was promoted to executive vice president of basketball operations by the Kroenke family, along with Jon Wallace, as they prepare for what could be a defining period for the franchise.
“He worked extremely hard to get where he is,” said former Nuggets GM Arturas Karnisovas. “No task is too small. It’s crucial to understand each role in the front office as you advance, and Ben has that insight.” Tenzer’s upbringing in Los Angeles shaped his principles, even if he didn’t realize it at the time. As a middle child, he was naturally more reserved but was an avid observer, a trait praised by his mother, Debbie.
With a father connected to the entertainment industry, which prioritized client representation, Tenzer was slowly introduced to the sports agency world. He spent significant time at the Tellem household, where athletes frequently visited, providing him with a unique perspective on the industry and its discussions.
During his youth, Tenzer met his favorite athlete, Giambi, whose path he admired. Although he focused on baseball, his deep interest in sports led to internships where he performed various tasks, from driving athletes to completing errands. His mother emphasized that Tellem instilled a strong work ethic in the kids who worked with him every summer.
Tenzer later graduated from CU Boulder with aspirations in business. Despite advice suggesting he should seek traditional internships, he was drawn to sports and made the effort to connect with the Nuggets. After finishing his degree, he returned to the Nuggets’ front office in 2013, becoming a reliable presence known for his financial expertise and strong relationships.
