Chief selector Gazi Ashraf Hossain Lipu made a statement that ignited a debate: “As long as Miraz is playing, Mosaddek doesn’t stand a chance.” This comment has prompted deeper scrutiny into the national team’s selection methods. How did Mosaddek Hossain react to this remark? In an exclusive conversation with The Daily Star’s Abdullah Al Mehdi, the seasoned allrounder, with 80 international appearances, shared his thoughts on the matter.
The Daily Star (DS): What did the chief selector say to you following his comments in the media?
Mosaddek Hossain (MH): I heard about his comments through media reports. However, during a meeting in Chattogram, he personally apologized and clarified that his remarks were mainly regarding the Test team. He reassured me not to take it personally and that I was still considered for selection.
DS: Did you learn about his remarks through the media? What was your reaction?
MH: Surprisingly, I found out through social media. The same day, I was part of a practice match, and though I performed decently, my mindset was affected upon seeing the news. If another player were compared like that, I would feel quite frustrated. It’s not ideal to pit players against each other, as it can foster bad feelings, especially since Miraz and I share a strong camaraderie.
DS: After noteworthy performances in the Premier League, did you anticipate a national team recall?
MH: It’s a complex situation. Clubs like Abahani and Mohammedan strive for top performance, and I’ve earned their trust for consistency. However, the financial situation was tough this year, leading to reduced payments, impacting morale. After facing these challenges, I hoped for a chance in the national team, but the comments deeply affected my motivation.
DS: Did you believe you might not make the national team again?
MH: Yes, the remarks implied that my opportunities were limited. I would never wish Miraz to fail; he’s the captain of Bangladesh, and our roles differ significantly. Miraz is more than a teammate; he’s like a little brother to me.
DS: You were in the running during the West Indies tour for the 2023 World Cup, but why weren’t you ultimately selected?
MH: The crux of the issue was my role. I’d previously batted at 6-7, but during that selection phase, I was batting lower in the order. While I met the team’s expectations as an allrounder, an explanation as to why I wasn’t included would have been appreciated. There’s a lack of transparency in these decisions.
