Jed Hoyer Signs Extension with Cubs
MILWAUKEE – The Chicago Cubs, currently boasting one of the best records in baseball, have decided to extend their long-standing partnership with Jed Hoyer, their president of baseball operations. This decision comes as the 5 p.m. CT Trade Deadline approaches, providing an opportunity to enhance the roster further.
A Long-Term Commitment
This extension marks Hoyer’s 14th year in the Cubs’ front office. Initially joining the organization as general manager under former president Theo Epstein, Hoyer was promoted to his current position following Epstein’s exit after the 2020 season.
Hoyer’s Vision for the Cubs
Expressing gratitude for the support from the Ricketts family, Hoyer stated, “The Cubs are a special organization with an amazing fan base. I’m excited to keep building on the momentum we have and to work with a terrific baseball operations staff to consistently deliver a championship-caliber team for this great city.”
Previous Successes
Alongside Epstein, Hoyer played a pivotal role in transforming the Cubs’ roster, leading them to break a 108-year World Series drought with their victory over Cleveland in 2016. Under their guidance, the team made five playoff appearances in six years, from 2015 to 2020.
Future Goals
Following that successful era, Hoyer disassembled the core group, including notable players like Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant, aiming to construct “the next great Cubs team.” He used the 2021-22 seasons for a comprehensive rebuild, enhancing the team’s farm system and rethinking player development.
Key Additions and Performance
The signing of shortstop Dansby Swanson to a seven-year, $177 million contract prior to the 2023 season reignited Chicago’s competitive aspirations. While narrowly missing the playoffs in 2022 and 2023, the Cubs are now looking to solidify their playoff chances with a blend of veteran players and emerging talents.
Upcoming Trade Deadline Strategy
As the Trade Deadline approaches, Hoyer’s main focus is to strengthen the team’s pitching rotation. Given his history of aggressive strategies, fans can expect the possibility of significant moves to secure the Cubs’ playoff berth for the first time since the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.
