Hunter Sallis Transitions to the NBA
LAS VEGAS – Like any Gonzaga fan, Hunter Sallis was invested in the recent NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers.
Supporting Friends on the Big Stage
Sallis found himself rooting for his college roommate, Chet Holmgren, who joined Gonzaga’s standout 2021 recruiting class alongside Sallis. Every time Holmgren made a block or dunk, Sallis cheered, but he also faced a dilemma as he watched former teammate Andrew Nembhard play for the Pacers.
Embarking on His NBA Journey
Now three years after sharing the court with Holmgren and Nembhard, Sallis is starting his own journey in the NBA—a path many expected he’d take after being ranked among the top players in the 2021 class at Millard North High School in Omaha.
Strong Ties to Gonzaga
Although the Philadelphia 76ers announced his signing under the Wake Forest banner due to his recent transfer, Sallis still cherishes his time at Gonzaga. He speaks fondly of the friendships he developed and the skills he learned, stating that playing under coach Mark Few was a transformative experience.
Gonzaga and Wake Forest: Key Learning Experiences
At Gonzaga, Sallis honed his defensive skills, becoming versatile enough to guard multiple positions, while at Wake Forest, he refined his offensive game, learning to be a dominant scorer and facilitator.
Decision to Transfer
After two years as a reserve at Gonzaga, the decision to enter the transfer portal surprised many. Despite being in line for a starting position, Sallis sought the opportunity to play more extensively, and choosing Wake Forest proved beneficial, where he was named ACC Newcomer of the Year and made consecutive All-ACC First Team selections.
Adjusting to the NBA
Sallis made a noticeable impact during the Summer League, showcasing his defensive instincts and offensive potential. However, he faces tough competition for playing time in Philadelphia and is expected to spend some time with the G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats, as he navigates his rookie season.
