Pittsburgh Steelers Defensive Captain Cameron Heyward’s Contract Negotiations
LATROBE, Pa. — Cameron Heyward, a seasoned defensive leader for the Pittsburgh Steelers, indicated on Monday that he might consider missing regular-season games as he pursues a renegotiation of his 2024 contract extension.
In his initial public statements since ESPN’s Adam Schefter disclosed his hold-in situation and request for a new contract, Heyward stated, “There are definitely options out there that could reflect that.” He expressed a desire to focus on the upcoming season but acknowledged that negotiations haven’t unfolded as he had hoped.
Heyward, who was drafted by the Steelers in 2011, initiated his request for contract renegotiation back in February. His decision to hold in during training camp practices was influenced by the negotiation process.
“I’m looking to be valued… It’s hard for me, after the year I’ve had, to really justify playing at the number I’m playing at,” he said.

He expressed disappointment over the current state of negotiations, wishing he could focus solely on football. Heyward’s contract, which he signed in September 2024, is a two-year deal worth $29 million, through the end of the 2026 season. His average annual salary ranks 23rd among interior defensive linemen.
Despite his previous agreement, Heyward clarified that he had anticipated a performance-based conversation following his All-Pro season. He earned first-team All-Pro honors after a stellar year, recording eight sacks and 71 combined tackles while leading defensive linemen in pass defenses.
While Heyward has kept his specific requests private, he has discussed the possibility of converting next year’s bonus into guaranteed money. “It’s not unprecedented,” he noted, highlighting that other players have navigated similar situations.
In response to concerns about his contract, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin emphasized strong communication with Heyward, stating, “It’s a component of big business… We’ll find a way to see our way through these things.”
