Ravichandran Ashwin Comments on IPL Trade Speculation
Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin recently addressed rumors regarding a potential IPL trade involving himself and Sanju Samson for the 2026 season. The speculation arose after reports indicated that Samson requested the Rajasthan Royals to trade him, while Ashwin may leave the Chennai Super Kings. Reports also suggested that CSK showed interest in acquiring Samson, triggering further discussions.
Ashwin’s Views on Fan Reactions
On his YouTube channel ‘Ash Ki Baat’, Ashwin expressed surprise at fan reactions to the rumors. He explained that players receive an email at the end of each IPL season detailing their performance, the franchise’s expectations, and options for contract renewal. “I always thought fans knew the rules, but the comments show that clarity is needed,” he stated.
Contractual Clarity and Player Decisions
Ashwin elaborated that after playing for three years with RR, he received annual performance reviews outlining expectations and contract renewals. He mentioned that players could express their interest in continuing with the franchise during this process. “Currently, there are no decisions that come from players; they often stem from rumors or franchise insights,” he added.
Trade Dynamics with Samson
Addressing the potential swap with Samson, Ashwin noted the significant difference in their contracts, with Samson’s valued at 18 crores compared to his own 9.5 crores. “For CSK to take Samson, they must have 18 crores available or negotiate a trade,” he explained. While he confirmed no insider knowledge about negotiations, he mentioned that he had sought clarity about his role and improvements.
Franchise Decisions on Player Availability
Ashwin stated that only the franchise management could confirm Samson’s status. “If Sanju is available for trade, it’s something RR needs to address, and they must consider Sanju’s preferences as well,” he said. He emphasized that player decisions depend on their desire to stay with the franchise, acknowledging the complexity of these discussions.
Ashwin’s Experience with CSK
In response to reports about his potential exit from CSK, Ashwin reaffirmed that he sought clarity about his role after a season where he played only nine matches, a first for him in the IPL. “For any trade, CSK needs to ensure there’s room in the budget and make necessary player adjustments,” he noted.
Future with CSK
When asked about the possibility of playing for CSK next season, Ashwin remarked, “If I’m not with CSK, it could still benefit them, but it’s not solely about me.” His comments reflected a pragmatic approach to the uncertainties of team formations in the IPL.
