Increased Security Urged After Daylight Robbery
Security is a critical concern outside casinos like Jake’s 58 in Islandia, especially following a recent incident where a 71-year-old man was robbed in the parking lot on Sunday afternoon. Law enforcement indicates that such venues may foster the perception that visitors are carrying significant amounts of cash, prompting the need for robust security measures.
The victim, who remains unnamed, was targeted around 3:40 p.m. as he approached his vehicle after reportedly winning “a large cash payout” at the casino. The perpetrator, who was able to secure only “a small amount” of money before fleeing due to the intervention of bystanders, was later apprehended at his residence in Port Jefferson Station, according to police reports.
Aaron Hayes, the 24-year-old suspect, pleaded not guilty to third-degree robbery in Central Islip’s First District Court on Monday and was released without bail. His attorney, Mary Claire Hartill, defended Hayes, stating, “My client is a very respectable young man from a good family. All facts are not being reported accurately.”
