Excitement at UConn Women’s Basketball Open Practice
FAIRFIELD — Upon entering Sacred Heart’s Pitt Center for Sunday’s open practice, fans filled the gym with palpable excitement as they anticipated an early glimpse of the UConn women’s basketball team, the reigning national champions gearing up for the 2025-26 season.
Team Attendance and Health Update
All 15 players were present, although UConn was not at full strength. Sophomore Morgan Cheli was the only player not fully dressed, continuing her recovery from season-ending ankle surgery. Redshirt sophomore Jana El Alfy and freshman Blanca Quinonez also didn’t participate, though there were no visible injuries. El Alfy, who redshirted last season due to an Achilles injury, and Quinonez, who joined UConn in August after professional play in Italy, were still adjusting.
Notable Player Conditions
Junior Ashlynn Shade participated in non-contact drills with a wrap on her leg but did not participate in the scrimmage. In contrast, sophomore Allie Ziebell fully participated while wearing a protective face mask.
Team Dynamics and Early Practice Observations
Playing in front of a crowd for the first time since winning the national title, UConn faced some anticipated challenges. However, they have over a month before their season opener against Louisville on Nov. 4, and the team has not yet begun official practices.
Standout Performances from Key Players
Injuries have previously limited the playtime of Azzi Fudd and Caroline Ducharme, but their synergy was evident in practice. Ducharme scored the first points, courtesy of Fudd’s assist, while Fudd scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, showcasing her defensive and offensive capabilities.
Adjustments for Newcomers
Transfer Serah Williams showed the need for adjustment as she transitioned from a struggling Big Ten program, demonstrating solid defense but struggling offensively. Freshman Kelis Fisher exhibited speed but had trouble maintaining control, while Kayleigh Heckel stood out, quickly adapting and providing strong offensive contributions.
Highlighting Other Players
Redshirt junior Ice Brady surprised with her role in the rotation, showcasing improved confidence and defensive performance. Additionally, Ayanna Patterson, returning from injuries, displayed her athletic prowess, indicating she may play a crucial role in the upcoming season.
