SJC Boxing Club: A Hidden Gem in Fort Myers
The SJC Boxing Club, along with the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame, is situated near downtown Fort Myers, close to the Caloosahatchee River and the historic Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Despite its prime location, many passersby on Cleveland Avenue remain unaware of its presence.
This gym serves as a sanctuary filled with inspiration, mentorship, and dedication, blending a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of the 1930s boxing era with vibrant community engagement. It features a boxing ring dating back to the 1930s, embodying the spirit of legendary fighters like Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano.
To find SJC, one should turn off Cleveland Avenue onto Courtney Drive, just opposite the Edison Mall. After turning left, past a pole fitness gym and a Hawaiian shaved ice shop, SJC comes into view. It’s the place that transformed Carlos Nunez’s life.
At SJC, 271 children from 59 local schools receive valuable coaching and support while their families benefit from free groceries. Founded by Steve J. Canton, the gym stands as a tribute to both boxing and community service over its impressive 36-year history.
The inspirational story of SJC has even been captured in a film titled “Worth The Fight” by Fort Myers filmmaker John Biffar. Nunez’s journey, involving struggles far beyond the boxing ring, illustrates his determination to change his life. Previously battling alcoholism, he found hope at SJC.
Before discovering the gym, Nunez faced the harsh reality of his life choices. Overweight and desperate for change, he decided against taking drastic actions and sought assistance instead. With a newfound determination, he lost over 100 pounds and decided he would not allow humiliation to deter him from reaching his potential.
Initially intimidated by Canton, the founder, Nunez eventually mustered the courage to seek guidance. Upon meeting Canton, he conveyed his ambitious aspiration of becoming the heavyweight champion of the world despite his modest size of 5’7” and 150 pounds. Canton welcomed him enthusiastically, demonstrating his commitment to mentoring individuals like Nunez.
Even as he nears 80 and faces health challenges, Canton dedicates countless hours—estimated at 16 to 18 each day—to ensure the gym continues to thrive for aspiring boxers and their families. Nunez describes the gym’s distinctive atmosphere, from its unique scent reminiscent of sweat and leather to the dedication visible in every corner, capturing the essence of what boxing, known as “The Sweet Science,” means at SJC.
