Grand Canyon Basketball’s Midnight Madness Unveils New Season
As the clock hit midnight, Grand Canyon University’s basketball ambiance burst forth in a thrilling spectacle. The event, known as Midnight Madness, kicked off GCU’s Mountain West era, featuring Havocs fans dressed as their favorite characters at the Global Credit Union Arena.
Students camping overnight on the Quad lawn were rewarded for their commitment and enthusiasm for Lopes basketball. Excitement filled the air as attendees prepared for “The Biggest Party in College Basketball” ahead of the upcoming exhibition game against USC in a few weeks.
Midnight Madness turned the arena into a vibrant celebration, reminiscent of a bounce house, lasting for an exhilarating two hours. Lopes’ head coach, Bryce Drew, energized the crowd, emphasizing the event’s significance: “We are ‘The Biggest Party in College Basketball’ and tonight we are also the biggest show.”
An eager line of students stretched from the Quad, past the Lope Shop, and around GCU Stadium, with fireworks igniting the atmosphere. The Havocs proudly sang “The Star-Spangled Banner,” as they filled the arena with enthusiasm, creating a lively club-like environment.
First-year women’s basketball head coach Winston Gandy shared his excitement as he experienced the electric atmosphere. Continuous music pumped through the venue, leading up to a dramatic midnight countdown which culminated in captivating performances from GCU Cheer, the Drumline, and Dancers before the basketball teams were introduced.
The night was marked by various contests and giveaways, with players engaging with fans, showing their anticipation for the season ahead. Nana Owusu-Anane expressed gratitude to the spirited crowd, emphasizing their crucial role in what promises to be a rewarding season.
As the night reached its peak, Gandy and Drew made a grand entrance from a Lightning McQueen car, highlighting the new beginnings for the team. Drew reflected on the vision that led him to GCU and invited everyone to join them in their journey, asserting, “This year, we want everyone to know who will be at the top of the Mountain West Conference.” The Lopes’ exhibition game against USC is set for October 25, with the women’s season opener on November 8 against Idaho State.
