Kansas forward Flory Bidunga showcased his talents during an NCAA basketball game against North Carolina on November 8, 2024. After a brief venture into the transfer portal earlier this spring, Bidunga took time to contemplate his experience with the Jayhawks.
Despite a disappointing end to the 2024-25 season with an early NCAA Tournament exit, Bidunga exhibited moments of brilliance and athleticism that hint at his potential as an elite rebounder and shot blocker. His playing time was limited, averaging just 16.2 minutes per game due to competition for minutes with All-American Hunter Dickinson and veteran KJ Adams.
“I wanted a bigger role this year,” Bidunga reflected. He had discussions with head coach Bill Self, who emphasized the importance of hard work. “He taught me I need to finish what I started,” he noted of their conversation.
This season, Bidunga will undoubtedly have a significant role as a sophomore center, necessitating a stronger presence in the paint to support star guard Darryn Peterson. “I can’t wait to show what I’ve been working on,” he expressed, hinting at improvements in his outside game.
Self noted Bidunga’s increased comfort on the perimeter, highlighting his improved ball handling and playmaking abilities, benefiting from his time learning alongside skilled players like Dickinson. “He’s become a good passer and a better screener,” remarked Self, indicating that Bidunga could be one of the most reliable players on the team.
Bidunga’s improved performance this offseason has made him a key player. With fewer competitors for playing time compared to last season, he will team up frequently with guard Melvin Council Jr., who praised Bidunga’s skills, particularly in pick-and-roll situations.
As one of the most experienced players on the roster, Bidunga is poised to take on a leadership role, reflecting on his journey and the improvements he’s made. “I feel like I will have more jobs to do this coming season,” he concluded, ready to make an impact for the Jayhawks.
