West Indies cricketers achieved a triumphant series victory against Bangladesh, winning all three matches. This clean sweep is a significant accomplishment, demonstrating their superiority, although it doesn’t indicate a full recovery for West Indies cricket. It does show that every journey begins with small advances. Prior to this series, West Indies ranked ninth in the international T20 standings, with Bangladesh in tenth place.
This series underscores that winning is the only path upward, regardless of the opponent. In sports, success over competitors defines dominance, and the West Indies exemplified this through their standings across formats.
T20 cricket is fast-paced and offers limited chances to recover from poor starts, whether batting or bowling. The unpredictability of outcomes remains a hallmark of the sport, adding pressure to performances.
Credit is due to the captains, Shai Hope for the first two matches and Roston Chase for the final game, for their teams’ commendable victories on Bangladesh’s home ground.
In the preceding ODI series, West Indies suffered a two-to-one defeat, managing to win the second game after a tied match, edging it in the Super Over. It’s worth noting that the pitches for the T20s were significantly more conducive to batting compared to those prepared for ODIs, which favored spinners.
The West Indies’ batting performance did not meet the necessary standards against the spin bowling in ODIs. However, the T20 series showed easier batting conditions, allowing players like Chase to acknowledge the difference in pitch preparation.
In any cricket match, especially at the international level, a batsman must adapt effectively to varying playing conditions. This adaptability is crucial, and sometimes, it benefits a player to be rested for a time to regain form. The right approach is essential to maintain a player’s confidence and motivation.
Several players in the WI squad could benefit from this strategy, including Sherfane Rutherford, who has struggled recently. He has previously shown potential, but his recent performances have been disappointing. Similarly, Brandon King, who has been opening with limited success, might improve with a break to reassess his game strategy.
Alick Athanaze is another promising batsman who should avoid risky shots early in his innings. Meanwhile, Ackeem Auguste and Amir Jangoo show great potential as left-handed batsmen who can excel with the right guidance and encouragement.
Consistent practice is vital for the bowlers to maintain effective line and length. The acquisition of a capable coach and a focused selection committee is necessary for the advancement of West Indies cricket. A series against New Zealand would be a beneficial next step for the team.
