Apple is set to introduce an affordable MacBook in 2026, expected to be priced lower than the $999 MacBook Air. This new model aims to enhance Apple’s competitiveness against budget-friendly Chromebooks and Windows laptops.
If you’re considering a computer for simple tasks like document writing, web surfing, or watching videos, it might be worth waiting to see what Apple unveils. Below, we’ve summarized what we currently know about this new Mac.
Size
According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the low-cost MacBook will likely feature a display size of about 13 inches. In comparison, the MacBook Air has a 13.6-inch display, indicating the new model may be slightly smaller. However, it should closely resemble the 13-inch MacBook Air.
Design and Display
The budget MacBook will come with a standard LCD display, lacking mini-LED technology or ProMotion refresh capabilities. It may be offered in vibrant colors similar to the iMac, with options like silver, blue, pink, and yellow, as per Kuo’s suggestions.
A-Series Chip
Apple intends to equip the MacBook with the A18 Pro chip, first seen in the iPhone 16 Pro models. This chip, built on a second-generation 3-nanometer process, includes 8GB of RAM and supports Apple Intelligence.
Performance Capabilities
With the A18 Pro chip, the budget MacBook will handle tasks similar to what can be done on an iPhone 16 Pro. This device could serve as a cost-effective alternative to low-priced iPads with a keyboard and will be capable of running macOS, unlike the iPadOS system. It should manage everyday activities like web browsing, video watching, and document editing effectively.
Pricing
While exact pricing details are not yet available, Bloomberg reports it will be “well under $1,000,” meaning it will need to be less than the starting price of the MacBook Air at $999. Given the pricing of other Apple products, a range between $499 and $799 seems plausible for this model.
Expected Launch Date
The low-cost MacBook may be released in the first half of 2026. Since updates for the MacBook Air are anticipated in early 2026, the launch of this budget model could align with that timeframe.
