Gulf Coast Golfing: A Remarkable 89-Year-Old Achieves Milestone
According to the National Golf Foundation, approximately 55% of golfers successfully complete their rounds in under 100 strokes, while only 26% consistently finish under 90. However, 89-year-old Joseph McAvoy defies these statistics.
McAvoy proudly states, “I’ve shot my age or under 2,037 times to date. Today marks another achievement, bringing my total to 2,038.” He relocated to the Gulf Coast in 2008, fully pursuing his passion for golf.
McAvoy plays six times a week, continuously rekindling his love for the sport through a few essential practices. He shares, “Good health, access to a good golf course, supportive friends, enjoying the outdoors, and maintaining physical fitness are key to my game.”
His friend and fellow golfer, David Rees, remarked, “Joe is truly extraordinary. Everyone here adores him. He’s likely one of the finest iron players I have ever encountered over the years.”
Another friend, golfer Chase Lyons, adds, “He’s mastered the art of the game. He genuinely enjoys it, and we frequently discuss our experiences. He’s an all-around excellent golfer.”
Along with a commemorative plaque he received from Estero Country Club for surpassing the 2,000 milestone, McAvoy meticulously logs each accomplishment in his personal journals.
With his impressive records and accolades, more achievements are certainly on the horizon for Joseph McAvoy.
