Giannis Antetokounmpo Focused on Recovery
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo emphasized his commitment to regaining health and aiding the Milwaukee Bucks in improving their performance, rather than engaging in discussions about his future.
Speculation Surrounding Future Plans
In his first press conference since a December 3 ESPN report suggesting talks between him and the Bucks regarding his future, Antetokounmpo stated that he had not engaged in conversations about staying in Milwaukee or seeking a trade. He hasn’t played since injuring his right calf during a game against the Detroit Pistons.
Injury Concerns
“Conversations will happen between my agent and the Bucks, and other teams and executives,” Antetokounmpo said. “But I’m focused on my teammates and, most importantly, on returning to health.” The Bucks have struggled, holding an 11-16 record, including a 2-8 record in the games without him.
Reflection on Past Injuries
Previously, Antetokounmpo missed four games due to a left adductor strain and now suspects that an early return may have contributed to his calf injury. “Overcompensating can lead to these kinds of issues, especially when returning quickly from an injury,” he explained.
Trade Rumors and Media Attention
This season is especially crucial for the Bucks amidst growing speculation about Antetokounmpo’s future, including unconfirmed trade discussions with the New York Knicks prior to the season. He admitted that talk around his potential trade is at an all-time high.
Impact on Team Dynamics
Antetokounmpo acknowledged the strain rumors place on his family and teammates. While he does not need to hold formal discussions about his commitment, he makes efforts to reassure his teammates regarding the team’s direction and urgency.
Focus on the Game
Ultimately, Antetokounmpo reiterated that the focus should remain on winning, stating, “At the end of the day, we’re fighting for our lives. Rumors won’t help us win; we need to concentrate on basketball.”
