ORLANDO, Fla. — Trevor Immelman mentioned on Friday that he maintains frequent communication with the CEO of LIV Golf in his capacity as the chairman of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). They are collaboratively addressing concerns regarding how the Saudi-backed league structures its 54-man roster.
Since its inception in June 2022, LIV Golf has yet to secure any world ranking points. Currently, only six of its players are ranked within the top 100 globally based on points accumulated from major tournaments or events on the Asian and European Tours.
LIV Golf’s initial application to join the OWGR system was denied in October 2023. A new application was submitted last summer under the leadership of Scott O’Neil, the CEO who succeeded Greg Norman.
Immelman, a former Masters champion and CBS golf analyst, took over as chairman of the OWGR in April. He confirmed that he frequently speaks with O’Neil, even exchanging texts during his pro-am at the PNC Championship on Friday.
“We are actively collaborating to seek solutions and understand their future plans,” Immelman stated. “They’re considering evolving their league format. They plan to extend to 72 holes and potentially expand their player field further.” He emphasized the cooperative nature of their efforts to resolve these matters.
LIV Golf’s upcoming season is scheduled to commence on February 4 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. When asked if a decision could be finalized before the start date, Immelman responded, “I believe there’s a possibility.”
While LIV initially hosted 54-hole tournaments without cuts, it has opted to transition to 72 holes for the 2026 season. Immelman stressed that the number of holes played is not the central concern; rather, it centers on how the 24 tours under the OWGR operate, with an emphasis on meritocracy and equitable opportunities.
