This narrative is derived from a discussion with Kanish Shah, a 26-year-old software engineer at Walmart residing in Milpitas, California. Business Insider has confirmed his employment status through documentation. His comments have been edited for brevity and clarity.
Transitioning to the U.S. for Education
I relocated from India to the U.S. in August 2021 to pursue a master’s degree in computer science at the University of Southern California. Shortly thereafter, I began searching for a summer internship, but my plans did not unfold as expected.
Facing Rejections from Big Tech
Like many aspiring software engineers, I was eager to work for a major tech company such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, Meta, or Netflix. I focused on applying to these tech giants, yet the competition was fierce. Unfortunately, I received rejections from all of them, which was quite disheartening.
Finding Opportunities Beyond Major Companies
My setbacks extended beyond the large tech firms; I submitted hundreds of applications and received fewer than 15 responses. Ultimately, one opportunity materialized into an internship with Walmart. This experience taught me that numerous paths can lead to a successful tech career.
Internship Experience and Growth
One of my early applications was for a software engineering role at Walmart, for which I had no referral. In October 2021, a recruiter contacted me about an online assessment followed by two technical interviews. Soon after, I received an offer and started the internship in May. I approached this internship as an extended interview, actively seeking feedback, being vocal in meetings, and finding a mentor. This strategy helped me secure a full-time role at Walmart, which I began in June 2023.
A Thriving Work Environment
Joining Walmart as a full-time employee coincided with the company’s major transformation towards becoming a tech-driven, AI-enhanced organization. This presented a unique chance to contribute to significant technological advancements while enhancing my skills. I’m pleased with my choice as Walmart offers a positive work culture and maintains a good work-life balance, allowing me to enjoy time with family and friends on weekends.
Advice for Aspiring Tech Professionals
To young professionals in tech, aiming for a position at a Big Tech company is valid, but not securing such a role should not be discouraging. High-impact opportunities exist in various environments, including startups and emerging tech companies. Moreover, competitive compensation is achievable outside traditional Big Tech; I earn a six-figure salary. Given the recent adjustments in the tech industry, I believe job security should not be tied to a single entity. Focus on what you can control: continuously enhance your skills and remain adaptable. Therefore, I encourage staying open to diverse opportunities where you can learn and grow, as the tech landscape is vast.
