Michael Carrick Secures First Wins as Manchester United Head Coach
Michael Carrick has achieved victory in his first two matches as the head coach of Manchester United. However, Paul Scholes remains skeptical about Carrick’s potential for a long-term role in the position.
According to Scholes, previous experiences with Ole Gunnar Solskjær will likely make Manchester United hesitant to permanently appoint Carrick, even though he has made a strong start to his coaching career at the club.
After Ruben Amorim’s dismissal, Carrick returned to Old Trafford as interim manager on a contract set to last until the season’s end. He previously managed Middlesbrough but left by mutual consent last summer. His coaching debut saw victories over both Manchester City and Arsenal.
Carrick’s positive impact has sparked suggestions that he could be considered for a longer-term head coach position. Nonetheless, Scholes believes that the club is still affected by their past decision to permanently confirm Solskjær following a successful interim period.
On the podcast “The Good, The Bad & The Football,” Scholes remarked that while Carrick’s pressure is low at present, taking over as full-time manager next season would bring its own challenges, including the necessity to achieve immediate results. He acknowledged that the club’s previous experience with Solskjær could impact Carrick’s chances.
Both Scholes and Nicky Butt echoed this sentiment, noting that Carrick is likely aware of the low probability of him securing the long-term head coach position. Butt suggested that Carrick’s goal would be to set the club on a positive path for the next appointed manager.
Scholes speculated that Carrick might eventually find a managerial position with another former club, possibly Tottenham Hotspur, depending on his performance in the interim role.
