Manchester City has been eliminated from the Champions League in the round of 16 after Vinicius Jr scored two goals in a 2-1 victory for Real Madrid, securing a 5-1 aggregate win.
After losing by three goals in the first leg in Madrid last week, City needed a flawless performance at the Etihad Stadium. However, Bernardo Silva’s first-half red card for handball made a comeback impossible, with Vinicius converting the resulting penalty.
Thibaut Courtois made several impressive saves early on, but Pep Guardiola’s insight that “it is more about how well we are going to defend” proved to be accurate. Fede Valverde, who scored a hat-trick in Madrid, even squandered a major chance in the opening minute.
Vinicius scored from the penalty spot, ending any realistic hopes of a City comeback, even though the team maintained a determined attitude. They managed to pull one goal back before halftime through Erling Haaland.
City, determined to succeed, changed to a 5-1-3 formation and came close to scoring again, with Jeremy Doku’s effort ruled out for offside. Madrid responded by introducing Kylian Mbappe, but City continued to press forward, seeing another potential goal from Rayan Ait-Nouri disallowed.
Ultimately, Vinicius sealed the victory with his second goal during stoppage time, shortly after having one ruled out by VAR. While the City crowd taunted him for losing the Ballon d’Or to Rodri in 2024, the night was undeniably owned by him and Madrid.
City put up a commendable fight, but their hopes were dashed due to the initial leg defeat and Silva’s dismissal. This marks the third consecutive year that Madrid has eliminated them.
With this being his second straight season not making it past the quarter-finals, questions will arise for Guardiola, who previously had only failed to reach the last eight once in 15 seasons.
While the scoreline may not reflect the true gap between the teams, it was Real Madrid that consistently delivered during key moments. Alvaro Arbeloa’s side progresses, leaving Guardiola and his team to ponder yet again what could have been.
