During the last years before her death at 27, Amy Winehouse struggled with substance abuse, with much of the blame directed toward her ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil.
At 43, Fielder-Civil has often been seen as the antagonist in Winehouse’s life story, particularly after being rumored to have introduced her to drugs.
Recently, he opened up about their tumultuous yet affectionate relationship in a podcast interview, expressing that he shouldn’t carry all the guilt over her death.
Fielder-Civil stated, “I know people think Amy’s death is my responsibility, but while I played a part, it’s unfair to hold me fully accountable. Amy made her own choices.” He described her as a strong individual who continued drinking despite its negative effects.
He shared memories of meeting Winehouse in a pub in 2001, noting that they weren’t initially involved with drugs, marking the beginning of a relationship filled with ups and downs, including inspiration for her album Back to Black.
Despite admitting to introducing her to heroin, Fielder-Civil emphasized they became addicts together, noting that Winehouse’s addiction peaked when he was imprisoned for a bar fight. He expressed regret over not being there for her during critical times and highlighted that he never forced her into substance abuse.
