Iranian Sailors Rescued by Sri Lanka Return Home
More than 200 Iranian sailors from two warships have returned to Iran after their rescue by Sri Lanka, as reported by Sri Lankan Deputy Defense Minister Aruna Jayasekera.
The IRIS Dena was attacked by a US submarine on March 4 while operating in the Indian Ocean, resulting in the deaths of 104 sailors on board.
At the time of the assault, the Iranian ships were returning from a naval drill hosted by India.
Sri Lanka managed to rescue 32 sailors from the IRIS Dena and helped 208 crew members from another ship, the IRIS Bushehr, which faced engine issues.
Jayasekera noted that around 8-10 Iranian sailors remain on the IRIS Bushehr, currently stationed off Sri Lanka’s eastern coast. The rescued sailors were previously housed in Sri Lankan military camps.
Additionally, another Iranian vessel, the IRS Lavan, which carried 183 sailors, docked in India in early March, with over 100 sailors having since departed.
