The Ilitch family has launched a new gaming division, according to Ilitch Companies. The new entity, named Ilitch Gaming, will manage the family’s gaming, hospitality, and entertainment interests while pursuing acquisition agreements that expand their casino portfolio in Michigan and beyond.
What happened
Ilitch Companies announced the formation of Ilitch Gaming, which will oversee existing casino holdings and aim for future growth opportunities. The launch includes agreements to acquire Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort in D’Iberville, Mississippi, and the remaining ownership interest in Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Financial details of the agreements remain undisclosed.
Chris Ilitch, CEO of Ilitch Companies, will chair Ilitch Gaming, with Bruce Dall as vice chairperson and John Policicchio serving as CEO and chief development officer. “The formation of Ilitch Gaming marks a defining new chapter in the evolution of our gaming and hospitality business,” Chris Ilitch stated.
Why it matters
This expansion allows Ilitch Gaming to strengthen its foothold in multiple markets, enhancing its competitiveness in the gaming industry. By uniting their gaming assets, the new structure aims to create synergy for future acquisitions, bolstering their economic influence in the communities they serve.
Background
The Ilitch family’s venture into the casino industry began in 1999 with the opening of MotorCity Casino in Detroit, developed at a cost of $525 million. Marian Ilitch acquired full ownership in 2005 after MGM Resorts’ acquisition of Mandalay Resort Group raised regulatory concerns.
In 2021, the family expanded into Atlantic City, purchasing a 50% interest in Ocean Casino Resort for $175 million, which had previously faced financial struggles. This investment helped revitalize the property, making it one of Atlantic City’s top-performing casinos.
What’s next
Pending regulatory approvals, Ilitch Gaming will proceed with the acquisitions of Scarlet Pearl Casino Resort and Ocean Casino Resort, further establishing its presence in regional gaming markets.
