Alliance sails into the Newport Bermuda Race two years after a harrowing incident, according to The Boston Globe.
What happened
During the 2024 Newport Bermuda Race, the sailing vessel Alliance struck a submerged object, creating a significant breach in its hull. Crew members immediately initiated their emergency plan as they found themselves wading in icy water, racing against time. “Get the pumps running to buy a few precious extra minutes,” said co-owner Mary Martin.
Two years later, Lydia Mullan, who was at the helm that fateful night, returned to the race aboard the Archambault 40 RC Banter, a vessel that had responded to the mayday call during the incident. Mullan reflected, “It was a continuation and a finishing of unfinished business,” highlighting the emotional significance of their return.
The 2024 race had seen Alliance take on water just 300 miles into its journey, prompting Martin to issue a mayday call. The prompt response from Banter and another vessel, Ceilidh, ultimately saved the lives of nine crew members. “You hear it on the radio, but when it’s your friends… in the middle of the Gulf Stream, and you know the Coast Guard can’t get there…” said Tori Gimple, a crew member from Banter, recalling the tense moments.
Why it matters
The return of Mullan and her crew signifies not just a physical journey but also a psychological healing process after surviving a maritime disaster. For many participants, winning the Newport Bermuda Race is a professional pinnacle, but for Mullan and her team, it represents a chance to confront their fears head-on and reclaim the emotional ties to sailing.
This year’s race offers an opportunity for healing and connection among those who experienced the trauma together, reinforcing friendships built on shared challenges and resilience.
Background
On June 23, 2024, Alliance was around 2:45 a.m. when it encountered catastrophic damage. Crew members aboard had practiced emergency procedures extensively, which proved critical as they prepared to abandon ship. As water flooded in, Mullan and her team faced the harrowing reality that they could lose everything.
Since the near-tragedy, Mullan sought therapy and found solace in sailing again, promising she would not allow her fears to dominate her life. Mullan insisted on participating in the race again, saying, “We’re really excited to spend some time with them and close the loop,” demonstrating the urge to overcome past anguish.
What’s next
The Newport Bermuda Race commenced on June 16, 2026, as crews readied themselves for the grueling 636-nautical-mile journey, possibly earning a coveted silver lighthouse trophy this year.
