Canadian Super Lightweight Prospect Eric Basran Heads to WBC Grand Prix in Riyadh
Undefeated Canadian super lightweight contender Eric Basran (7-0, 3 KOs) is set to leave shortly for the inaugural Riyadh Season/World Boxing Council (WBC) Grand Prix, taking place from April 17-20 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
This exciting single-elimination tournament will be streamed live on www.dazn.com/wbc, featuring 128 fighters across four weight classes: featherweight, super lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. All participants will undergo random drug testing as part of the WBC’s Clean Boxing Program, along with Riyadh Season’s compliance with VADA testing.
“I’m honored, excited, and grateful,” remarked the 26-year-old Basran regarding his participation in the WBC Grand Prix. “This is my chance to showcase my abilities to a global audience. Although I should have around 15 pro bouts by now, several have fallen through. Signing with Three Lions Promotions has opened up bigger opportunities like this one. Competing in the Grand Prix is an incredible stepping-stone for my career and will help elevate my profile among top super lightweight prospects worldwide.”
Before turning professional, Basran was a four-time Canadian National Champion and winner of the 2019 Canadian Olympic Qualifier, as well as earning a bronze medal at the 2019 Commonwealth Games. While he has competed predominantly in Canada and Mexico as a pro, Basran has extensive international experience as an amateur, having fought in countries such as Russia, the Czech Republic, Australia, and various locations throughout South America.
“I understand that many do not view Canada as a source of strong fighters,” Basran commented. “I aim to prove my talent and earn significant fights. This trip is purely business for me. Regardless of the opponent, I maintain the same mindset when I step into the ring. I know I am ready for this moment.”
Basran’s promoter, Dan Otter, expressed confidence in Eric’s abilities, stating, “We believe he can triumph in the super lightweight division of the WBC Grand Prix. This competition is a major milestone for the WBC, reflecting President Mauricio Sulaimán’s vision and the dedication of His Excellency Turki Al-Sheikh in launching the World Cup of Boxing.” The tournament’s format will feature initial rounds with six-round bouts that will increase to eight rounds for the finals, with fighters from over 40 countries participating.
