Steven Gerrard and Jose Mourinho Top Candidates for Rangers Manager Position
Rangers icon Ally McCoist has endorsed Steven Gerrard and Jose Mourinho as the leading contenders to take charge of his former team, which is currently facing difficulties after being outperformed by Celtic in the Premiership.
The club suffered a humiliating defeat in the fifth round of the Scottish Cup against Championship side Queen’s Park and were later eliminated from the Europa League by Athletic Bilbao.
This latest setback resulted in the dismissal of coach Philippe Clement, leading to former player Barry Ferguson stepping in as interim manager. Since taking on the role, Ferguson has seen his record consist of four wins, four losses, and two draws in ten games.
Given this inconsistent performance, Rangers officials are likely seeking other managerial options. Gerrard and Mourinho have both emerged as potential candidates, particularly since Mourinho has expressed interest in coaching one of the Scottish giants.
While Gerrard previously guided Rangers to an unbeaten Premiership title in 2021, his recent managerial experiences at Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq were less successful. Despite this, McCoist believes both should be prioritized for the club’s future.
McCoist emphasized the need for substantial financial backing for either candidate to rejuvenate the squad effectively, comparing Gerrard’s current situation to that of Frank Lampard, who has successfully repositioned his career after joining Coventry City.
With only five games remaining this season, Ferguson has called for clarity regarding his future, stressing the importance of the club’s direction, regardless of whether it’s him or another manager leading the charge.
