Major news in the Elder Scrolls universe has just been announced: Bethesda Game Studios and the remaster specialists at Virtuos have released a remastered version of Oblivion, the fourth installment in the beloved action RPG series. Although this awaited upgrade arrived on PC, Xbox Game Pass, and PS5 with little fanfare, the excitement surrounding it is undeniable.
This development brings up an important question: Where does that leave Elder Scrolls 6?
It has been 19 years since the original release of Oblivion, 14 years since Skyrim launched, and 11 years since Elder Scrolls Online debuted. Additionally, nearly seven years have passed since Bethesda first announced the development of Elder Scrolls 6 during E3 (now a fond memory). As fans eagerly await a return to the expansive world of Tamriel, updates have been scarce.
No Release Date Yet, but Some Timeline Clarity
Bethesda has not assigned a release date for the much-anticipated Elder Scrolls 6. Todd Howard has indicated that the focus on Starfield resulted in delays for Elder Scrolls 6, but development has been ongoing. Documents from the FTC’s legal dispute concerning the Microsoft-Activision merger suggest that, as of two years ago, the game was slated for a potential release in 2026.
Microsoft Acquisition and Multi-Platform Possibilities
Interestingly, Elder Scrolls 6 is no longer the longest-term project in Bethesda’s lineup. During Starfield promotional activities, Howard mentioned that Elder Scrolls 6 is expected to launch before a Fallout 5, which is also in development, though it remains unannounced. Furthermore, Howard has previously expressed that it is “hard to imagine” the game being an Xbox exclusive, hinting at a multi-platform release strategy.
Current Development Progress on Elder Scrolls 6
In March 2024, marking the 30th anniversary of Elder Scrolls, Bethesda reassured fans that Elder Scrolls 6 is actively in development. “Even now, returning to Tamriel and playing early builds brings us the same joy, excitement, and promise of adventure,” the message stated. However, some developers suggest that the prolonged development could stem from Howard’s management style, which focuses on a specific team size and a measured growth process for the studio.
Speculation on the Game’s Setting: High Rock?
While specific details about the game remain limited, speculation about its setting has been fueled over the years. The initial teaser for The Elder Scrolls 6 featured scenic landscapes, leading fans to theorize that the game may take place in the northern region of Tamriel, potentially High Rock. This theory gained traction, particularly after interpretations of hints in trailers for Starfield, which seemed to suggest connections to the Elder Scrolls universe.
