Mirra Andreeva has had an impressive start to her 2025 season, capturing two WTA 1000 titles.
Prior to 2025, Andreeva had only claimed a single singles title on the WTA Tour, winning at the Iasi Open in Romania the previous year.
A year later, the Russian tennis player is now a two-time WTA 1000 champion, following her victories in Dubai and Indian Wells this season.
Andreeva has climbed to seventh in the world rankings and is considered a strong candidate for the upcoming Madrid Open title.
Mirra Andreeva appreciates Coach Conchita Martinez for tolerating her ‘stubbornness’
After her second-round victory in Madrid, Andreeva expressed her gratitude for being coached by the former Wimbledon champion.
“I am really grateful that she still wants to work with me because sometimes I can be quite stubborn,” Andreeva said.
The young athlete added, “I’m just thrilled that she is still my coach, and our team atmosphere is fantastic.”
‘Passionate’ Conchita Martinez is the sole female coach in the WTA top ten
Andreeva stands out as the only player in the WTA top ten who is coached by a woman, with Martinez guiding her toward success.
The Spaniard believes that gender should not influence success in sports, emphasizing that ‘passion’ is the key factor in effective coaching.
“I am very passionate about what I do, and I believe that helps me provide players with what they need,” Martinez explained. “I truly enjoy my time with Mirra [Andreeva], and our connection is remarkable.”
As Andreeva aims for her third WTA 1000 title in Madrid, Martinez’s enthusiasm is expected to inspire her performance.
Conchita Martinez’s 1994 Wimbledon Triumph
While Andreeva has not yet reached a Grand Slam final, she hopes to achieve that milestone this year.
Martinez had a similar journey 30 years ago, having previously lost in two Grand Slam semi-finals before her Wimbledon triumph.
Competing as the number three seed, Martinez proved her championship potential, advancing to the final where she faced off against the legendary Martina Navratilova.
Martinez fought valiantly, clinching her only Grand Slam title with a victory over Navratilova, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
Whether Martinez can coach Andreeva to her first Major title this year remains to be seen, but it will certainly be an exciting storyline when the French Open starts on Sunday, May 25.
