The sequel series for Warrior, the 2011 film starring Tom Hardy, is in the works but may not come to fruition due to difficulties in finding a streaming platform.
Directed by Gavin O’Connor, who is promoting his latest film, The Accountant 2, O’Connor recently discussed Warrior in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He recounted that the initial plan was to develop the sequel for Paramount+, but the deal collapsed for unspecified reasons. The project seemed to gain traction when Max executives showed interest, but it was again halted.
O’Connor expresses his strong passion for Warriors, as the series is tentatively titled, but he acknowledges the concern that it may never materialize, depending on whether another streaming service decides to back it.
The Warrior Sequel Series Was Abandoned Twice by Streamers
O’Connor mentioned, “Initially, it was at Paramount+. We wrote a script; then they wanted to pursue a different direction. The reasons remain unclear to me. Eventually, HBO Max also showed interest but then opted to go a different way too. I’m really eager to find a home for this project. Excluding the original film, it’s the project I’m most passionate about.”
He elaborated on the concept for Warriors, which revolves around two male and two female fighters. He aims to deepen viewers’ connections with their lives outside the ring, similar to how the original film focused on the impending clash between two brothers. O’Connor believes the series has the potential to stand out in today’s television landscape.
“The essence of Warrior was two brothers destined to clash in the Sparta tournament. The series is called Warriors as it maintains that theme, with all four being fighters. But we will delve into their personal struggles leading up to their showdown,” he explained. He hopes to find a suitable platform for it, asserting that there’s nothing quite like it available.
Havoc is currently in theaters, while the original Warrior is available on Peacock.
