Magic: The Gathering has revealed three exciting new cards from its upcoming “Final Fantasy” set, with Variety providing an exclusive first look at the preview images released by Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast.
The newly introduced cards, created in partnership with “Final Fantasy” developer Square Enix, consist of The Strahl (an adaptation of Smuggler’s Copter), Luka Stadium (inspired by Strixhaven Stadium), and Tidus, Zanarkand Fayth (modeled after Thrasios, Triton Hero). These cards will feature on the “Final Fantasy Through The Ages” bonus sheet and are set for release alongside the full collection on June 13, which is available for preorder.
“The Strahl, also known as Smuggler’s Copter, is important to Balthier and Fran, who focus on vehicles,” shared Gavin Verhey, principal designer for Magic’s “Final Fantasy” collection, with Variety. “We aimed to incorporate it into the set, but it didn’t fit the main mechanics. Thus, we decided to include it on this bonus sheet, allowing Balthier, Fran, and The Strahl to be shown together, which is a fun nod. Smuggler’s Copter has a renowned legacy in Magic, making this a significant addition.”
Principal game designer Dillon Deveney added, “Gavin was gracious in his discussions about finding a role for The Strahl in the main set — that was my persistent suggestion. I believed we had to feature it due to its iconic status in ‘Final Fantasy.’ Eventually, Gavin identified the ideal position on the bonus sheet, connecting it back to Magic. This association amplifies the significance, as Smuggler’s Copter relates excellently to the sky pirates concept!”
Verhey noted that “Thrasios is an exciting inclusion we collaborated on closely with Square Enix.” The teams exchanged card ideas, and enthusiasm grew around Thrasios. “It’s essential to mention that they enjoy Magic immensely. Our weekly calls often involve playing cards together, showcasing their passion for the game. Thus, when we suggested Thrasios, the excitement was mutual, making it a perfect fit for the set.”
Senior game designer Daniel Holt shared his feelings about integrating the card “Strixhaven Stadium” as a nod to Blitzball, highlighting its relevance to fans of “Final Fantasy X.” He designed Strixhaven Stadium and felt it was a natural choice to blend it with his favorite game. “It fits seamlessly into the deck, especially considering its use of counters, aligning perfectly with Tidus.”
The “Final Fantasy” collection from Magic: The Gathering, launching on June 13, encompasses cards representing all sixteen mainline games in the franchise. Players can look forward to casting spells, summoning classic entities, and exploring beloved locations, all meaningful elements woven into a personalized narrative.
Executive producer Zakeel Gordon remarked, “Magic has had a presence in Japan since 1995, and we are receiving enthusiastic feedback from our Japanese community and retailers for this IP. We have special promotions prepared in Japan to celebrate this milestone. It’s crucial to engage authentically with the gaming culture in that region, fostering global excitement for our players.”
