Ben Griffin anticipated challenges despite breaking his tie with co-leader Matti Schmid early in the final round at Colonial, quickly establishing a five-shot lead after just five holes.
Schmid remained a contender, keeping the competition exciting until the very end.
Griffin claimed his first individual PGA Tour title a month after a team event victory, finishing with a 1-over 71 to total 12-under 268 in the Charles Schwab Challenge, edging out Schmid by one shot on a windy and warm day at Hogan’s Alley.

The Texas PGA Tour event featured a purse of $9.5 million, with the winner’s share amounting to $1,710,000, as reported by BetMGM.
Ben Griffin Edges Matti Schmid
Schmid challenged Griffin by requiring him to sink a 4-foot par putt on the 72nd hole after his own chip from the rough went in for a birdie. Griffin managed to save par from a bunker while controlling his chip shot with a tough lie. Schmid finished with a score of 72.
“It felt like whack-a-mole on that third shot,” Griffin reflected. “I was thinking Matti might make that. Luckily, I had a 4-footer and felt confident about it—just trusted my aim.”
Both players had tied scores in the first three rounds, as Schmid, aiming for his first tour victory in his 79th start, previously took a three-shot lead early in the third round.
Scottie Scheffler’s Performance
World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, a local favorite and last week’s PGA Championship winner, couldn’t replicate his strong Saturday performance. Starting six shots back, he managed only two birdies and a bogey for a final score of 69, finishing at 8 under.
Scheffler missed the chance to become the first player to win three consecutive tournaments since Dustin Johnson, tying for fourth place, just one shot behind Bud Cauley, who shot 67. “It was a tough day overall,” Scheffler admitted, noting Friday’s play had affected his chances.
Rickie Fowler also struggled in the final round, initially starting slow and then losing momentum with a double-bogey on the par-5 11th. Fowler finished with a score of 74, having previously ranked in the top 25.
