Will Dube’s bowling abilities push him up the pecking order? ©AFP
During India’s third practice session at the ICC Academy in Dubai, an unusual scene unfolded. A young boy repeatedly called out for Suryakumar Yadav, his pleas growing increasingly urgent. Typically, Suryakumar is quick to respond with a smile or a selfie, but he was unable to acknowledge the call as the team had to transfer to the nearby Dubai International Stadium.
The boy’s voice, still high-pitched and innocent, contrasted sharply with the seriousness of the players in the nets. India’s team dynamics have matured significantly with each session.
On September 8th at the ICC Academy, players like Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma, and Tilak Varma kicked off the batting practice, joined soon by Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav. Abhishek Sharma utilized his left-arm spin alongside other spinners while training with Hardik and Suryakumar.
Jitesh, after an extended batting session, participated in a focused fielding and wicketkeeping drill, indicating his role as India’s primary keeper. Meanwhile, Sanju Samson practiced separately, underscoring his diminished standing within the squad.
Shivam Dube’s prospects appear strong, not only for having batted and bowled consistently but also due to the pitches potentially favoring all-rounders. Coach Morkel emphasized the significance of players like Dube contributing in both departments.
As practice concluded and the players departed, the persistent calls for “Surya sir” faded into quietness. Nonetheless, Suryakumar’s contributions during training were evident and will influence crucial team decisions going forward.
