Every week during the regular season, and occasionally in the offseason, our writers covering the AFC North address key questions and significant storylines within the division. This week, we present a pre-draft discussion.
Urgency Levels Before the Draft
We’re just under a week from the draft. Rate the urgency level of your team’s GM to hit a home run from 1-10: 10 means it’s crucial for job security, while one suggests the roster is mainly set, and any additions are a bonus.
Steelers’ Perspective
Mike DeFabo (Steelers): I’d say a five. Omar Khan just received a contract extension through 2028, possibly increasing his decision-making power with Mike Tomlin’s departure. While free agency filled most immediate needs (aside from guard and QB), the Steelers hold a staggering 12 draft picks, the highest in the league, with the draft taking place in Pittsburgh. The QB situation takes some pressure off Khan; however, excelling in the draft, especially in the middle rounds, is essential to usher in a new, youthful core, leveraging the resources available for a historic outcome.
Ravens’ Challenges
Jeff Zrebiec (Ravens): The urgency is an eight. Although GM Eric DeCosta isn’t on the hot seat per se, increased pressure exists after John Harbaugh’s exit, requiring the team to address the aftermath of a tough 2025 season and set sights on a Super Bowl-caliber roster. This draft isn’t just about depth; the Ravens need to find a couple of impactful starters to rejuvenate a squad that lost 15 free agents and added only six, making it clear that significant reinforcements are necessary.
Bengals and Defensive Demands
Paul Dehner Jr. (Bengals): I’d rate it an eight — it could easily be a ten in other teams. While GM Duke Tobin’s job is secure, the urgency to fix a disappointing defense intensifies. The last Pro Bowler the Bengals drafted on defense was Geno Atkins in 2010. Despite a coaching shake-up, the team has struggled defensively, and finding playmakers in this draft is crucial for changing the narrative.
Browns’ Building Process
Zac Jackson (Browns): In Cleveland, GM Andrew Berry feels a pressing need to create a team that can show progress and excitement going forward, though his continued employment suggests some security. He ranks a seven regarding next week’s draft. The Browns need another solid draft after a strong effort in 2025, but the wise approach might be to focus on sound choices this year while deferring some significant decisions for the upcoming draft.
Addressing Team Needs
DeFabo: The Steelers have a significant need for a franchise QB, yet the prospects have diminished, likely forcing them to consider mid-draft options instead. The easiest fix will be at receiver, with many top prospects available, making Day 2 a prime opportunity.
Zrebiec: For the Ravens, acquiring quality interior defensive line help is urgent, especially after a lack of offseason moves in that area. Conversely, it’s easier to find aid on the interior offensive line, as viable guards and centers should be available in the earlier rounds.
