BTS Shines at Stanford Stadium: A Night of Joy and Reflection
As the opening notes of “Body to Body” echoed through Stanford Stadium on Sunday evening, the members of BTS were caught in a playful dogpile on stage.
Group leader RM found himself on the ground, playfully overwhelmed as V rolled over him like a child, while Jung Kook humorously pretended to perform CPR. With only moments to start his rap, RM playfully shouted into the mic, “F—k off!” as he kicked free from his giggling bandmates.
After years filled with uncertainty and pressure, it was evident that BTS has finally found their groove on what has become their biggest tour yet. It had been eight years since the group last performed as a full unit in the Bay Area, a period during which they achieved massive international fame and dealt with personal challenges, including mandatory military service that placed them on hiatus from late 2022 until their recent return.
In South Korea, all men are required to serve 18 months of military duty. Most do so in their early 20s, but some, like the oldest member Jin, can defer their enlistment—he began his service at age 30. This timing can be challenging for K-pop idols, as they usually peak in their early to mid-20s, risking losing their stardom while on hiatus.
Since the release of their new album in March, it’s clear that BTS is back in full force. With overwhelming demand for their shows, Stanford Stadium was chosen for this concert, despite being significantly smaller than their usual venues. Due to strict noise regulations, the show kicked off at 7 p.m., making for a unique experience as the sun set. Members expressed how special it was to see their fans’ faces clearly under the daylight.
Fans were treated to an exceptional performance featuring new tracks alongside their greatest hits. As they performed favorites like “Mic Drop” and “Idol,” the energy was palpable, with the crowd occasionally causing the metal stands to shake. Jimin and Jung Kook even wowed the audience with flips, showcasing their vitality and joy during the show.
Reflecting on their journey, RM acknowledged the fleeting nature of time and expressed hope that everyone enjoyed their evening. After years of anxiety and uncertainty, the sold-out crowd of 50,000 confirmed that BTS’s worries were unfounded—their fans had indeed waited for their return.
