BYD is exploring the possibility of entering Formula 1, potentially becoming the sport’s 12th team. Recent rumors suggest that BYD, a leader in the electric vehicle sector, is vying for a 24 percent stake in the Alpine F1 team, currently held by Otro Capital.
Negotiations involving the Renault Group, which owns Alpine, have attracted bids from various parties, including Horner and Mercedes, who supply Alpine’s power units. While public comments from Renault’s Flavio Briatore acknowledge interest from both Horner and Mercedes, Alpine remains tight-lipped, stating discussions are ongoing.
Currently, BYD’s focus appears to be on launching an entirely new F1 team rather than acquiring a stake in an existing one. Recently, Horner traveled to Cannes to meet with Li, and their discussions over two days revealed her enthusiasm for the potential F1 entry.
Li has affirmed BYD’s continuous dialogue with Formula One Group CEO Stefano Domenicali, expressing her admiration for F1 and the opportunity to showcase BYD’s technology. Despite facing a decline in net earnings, BYD’s global car sales rose, solidifying its position as the third-largest automaker.
As Horner explores new opportunities after his departure from Red Bull, he may emerge as a significant figure for BYD’s ambitions. His reputation and success in F1 make him an attractive candidate for investment, and his recent meetings with FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem indicate ongoing developments regarding the potential for a new team.
While Domenicali has emphasized caution in evaluating new teams, the prospect of a 12th team could bring financial benefits, particularly with a Chinese entry. The timing for opening expressions of interest for new teams remains uncertain, but BEYOND’s ambitions aligned with Horner’s connections could pave the way for significant changes in Formula 1’s landscape.
