Eric Church’s Inspiring Commencement Speech
Country music icon Eric Church has garnered acclaim for delivering what many are calling the “greatest” commencement speech. His address to University of North Carolina graduates has gone viral, following nearly a year of preparation.
With a guitar featuring the Tar Heels logo, Church emphasized themes of family and faith, likening them to the “six strings” of a guitar during his speech at Kenan Memorial Stadium on May 9.
“When all six are in tune, they create chords that can resonate deeply, carrying a broken person through their toughest times or uniting strangers,” he told the audience. “But one off-note disrupts everything; the moment you strum it, you’ll know it’s wrong.”
Starting with the “low E” string, Church equated it to one’s faith. “Your faith is the foundation of your life. Those who nurture their faith during ordinary times remain steadfast during extraordinary challenges,” he stated.
He advised the graduates to prioritize family, comparing it to the “A” string. “Your loved ones have supported you longer than you’ve been easy to love. Make time for them, not just when it’s convenient but every day,” he urged.
Church described the “D” string as the core of a chord, relating it to choosing a life partner. “The right partner enriches your life in ways no one else can. Select wisely and love fiercely,” he added, also bringing laughter by discussing the challenging “G-string” which symbolizes ambition and resilience.
In closing, Church emphasized the importance of community with the “B” string, cautioning against the dangers of digital isolation. He reminded attendees to connect meaningfully with those around them and to remain true to themselves, likening the “high E” string to individual authenticity.
His speech, which he shared on YouTube, received overwhelmingly positive responses, with many praising it as one of the best graduation speeches ever delivered. Church mentioned that he crafted the speech over nine months, inspired by a moment of creative frustration with his guitar.
