After spending several days in Atlantic City’s Marina District, it was time to proceed to the next location in my East Coast casino tour: Philadelphia. The drive, just over 60 miles, took about an hour. However, the contrast between these two casino scenes is much greater than the physical distance suggests. While Atlantic City is centered around casinos, Philadelphia features casinos more on its outskirts, not as a primary attraction.
A City Rich in Diversity
Having spent years living and studying in Pittsburgh, I often visited Philadelphia with family and friends. In this city, casinos are just a minor aspect of a vibrant urban landscape characterized by history, sports, universities, tourism, and unique neighborhoods. Hence, I was curious to see how a casino fits into this busy city backdrop.
Rivers Casino: An Integral Piece of Philadelphia’s History
My previous visits to Rivers Casino, originally named SugarHouse Casino, were based on its earlier identity from when it opened in 2010. Named after a local historical site, the venue stood on the banks of the Delaware River in Fishtown, occupying a former sugar refinery location. In 2019, it adopted the Rivers Casino name to align with its owner, Rush Street Gaming.
Approaching the Casino
The journey toward Rivers Casino Philadelphia starkly contrasted my previous experiences in Connecticut and Atlantic City. There’s no dedicated highway leading to it, nor any scenic drive through nature. Instead, I navigated the bustling city streets filled with traffic until I reached the property by the waterfront. The casino integrates itself seamlessly into the landscape rather than imposing upon it, presenting a practical and straightforward approach.
A Blend of Modernity and Efficiency
Upon entering the casino, I was struck by its modern ambiance, where cleanliness and organization prevailed. Unlike the opulence of properties like Caesars, Rivers Casino features contemporary design with ample lighting and high ceilings, offering a spacious feeling uncommon in urban casinos. The layout promotes movement and navigation, facilitating clear transitions between gaming areas, the sportsbook, and dining options.
Focus on Local Appeal
Rivers Casino Philadelphia differs significantly from others in that it does not aim to be a full-fledged resort. It lacks a hotel and extensive nightlife, focusing instead on being a local venue. I counted four restaurants and a few fast-food options, with most facilities catering to the surrounding community rather than targeting tourists.
Conclusion: A Functional Urban Casino
As I reflected on my experience while sitting by the riverbank, I realized just how distinct Rivers Casino was compared to other casinos on my journey. It doesn’t overwhelm with grandeur or extravagance but provides a practical, efficient, and urban setting. Rivers Casino channels the essence of Philadelphia—grounded in its heritage and seamlessly integrated into the city’s daily life.
