No Haaland, Cherki, or Doku, but a Win for City
Manchester City secured a comfortable victory against Crystal Palace, bringing them within two points of Arsenal after both teams have played 36 matches.
Despite fielding a significantly altered lineup before Saturday’s FA Cup final, Pep Guardiola’s team performed well, with Phil Foden showcasing his potential. However, Arsenal is set to face Burnley on Monday, and the likelihood of the Gunners dropping points to the relegated side seems minimal.
In the title race, City can only focus on winning their matches, as demonstrated in this game. Savinho scored in the 84th minute, following strikes from Antoine Semenyo and Omar Marmoush in the first half, keeping City in contention.
As Foden remarked, “A lot can happen on the last day. We’ve seen it many times when things don’t go your way. We just have to keep pushing and doing our part.” However, Arsenal could clinch the title if they defeat Burnley on Monday and City doesn’t win at Bournemouth the following day.
Guardiola made six changes from the prior 3-0 victory against Brentford, including the return of Josko Gvardiol, who hadn’t played since January due to injury. City’s defensive unit initially appeared shaky when Jean-Philippe Mateta’s goal was disallowed for offside.
City lacked energy at first, with their play often stagnant. However, Foden’s brilliant backheel assist led to Semenyo’s goal, which lifted City’s performance. Marmoush later added a second goal, giving City a comfortable 2-0 lead as they looked to continue their challenge for the title.
Despite difficult weather conditions, City maintained their composure and rhythm. Guardiola substituted Gvardiol and Nunes to introduce Nathan Aké and the impressive Jérémy Doku. Although Crystal Palace made multiple substitutions, they struggled to match City’s level of play. Glasner conceded, “City were simply too good for us.”
