George Foreman’s Final Resting Place
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Officials from Sioux City and George Foreman’s family have announced that the two-time heavyweight boxing champion was interred in a Northwest Iowa cemetery a year ago.
Although Foreman had no direct connections to Iowa, he developed a fondness for its tranquil beauty during a drive through the state in 1988. This experience left a lasting impression on him, leading him to express a desire to be buried there to his family.
Describing the landscapes of Iowa, particularly the Loess Hills, Foreman conveyed the sense of peace he experienced during his visit. “He mentioned driving through after the Olympics and truly seeing the heart of America,” said George Foreman IV, his son. “He never explained why he chose Iowa, but now that we are here, seeing the hills, the water, and the people, it makes perfect sense.”
Following his death, Foreman’s family journeyed across Iowa to honor his wish. Once they arrived at Logan Park Cemetery and took in the scenic vistas of Sioux City, they felt certain this was the right location for his final resting place.
On April 17, 2025, they fulfilled his request by laying him to rest at Logan Park Cemetery, which offers stunning views of the surrounding Loess Hills and proximity to Stone State Park. A year later, on April 16, 2026, the family returned to dedicate a monument at his gravesite and expressed gratitude to the local community for their support during the burial.
The monument, an eight-foot stone honoring Foreman’s life, took nine months to complete. It features images from his boxing career, alongside images of his beloved horses and German shepherds. “It’s remarkable to see how someone so well-known appreciated the beauty of the Loess Hills,” commented Cynthia Deck, a local resident.
The Legacy of George Foreman
Foreman’s life included winning a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics and later becoming heavyweight champion in 1973. After retiring and becoming an ordained minister in 1977, he made a comeback to boxing in 1987, becoming the oldest heavyweight champion at the age of 45 in 1994. Besides his sports career, he was also a successful entrepreneur known for the George Foreman Grill and remained active as a minister, author, and public speaker.
