Gurnoor Brar: From Football to Cricket Stardom
New Delhi: Gurnoor Brar, a promising pacer from Punjab, has received his first call-up to the Indian national cricket team. Growing up, he was an avid fan of bowling legends like Dale Steyn, Brett Lee, and Shoaib Akhtar, often mimicking their techniques even while crossing the street.
Early Influences
Brar, who started bowling at 16, credits his inspiration to Dale Steyn, saying, “I picked up bowling because of him. His skills and speed made him the best in the world.” However, his initial passion was for football and tennis, and he viewed cricket more as a casual pursuit.
Making a Name
A friend encouraged Brar to try out for cricket because of his impressive height of six feet five inches. This decision proved pivotal; after two years, he caught the attention of Shubman Gill, then part of the India Under-19 team, leading to his inclusion in the district lineup and eventually the Punjab Under-23 side.
Path to IPL
Brar debuted in List A cricket for Punjab in 2021 and made five first-class appearances the following year. Notably, he drew the interest of the Punjab Kings and joined as a net bowler, later impressing Shikhar Dhawan with his pace and joining the main squad as a replacement for Raj Angad Bawa.
Learning Through Experience
His IPL debut against the Lucknow Super Giants was a turning point. Despite initial nerves, Brar secured his confidence by being entrusted with the new ball. He learned valuable lessons about the importance of planning in bowling, especially after suffering a serious injury during a domestic tournament.
Guidance and Mentorship
With no contract post-injury, Brar received support from Gill, who invited him to the Gujarat Titans as a net bowler. In Gujarat, he found a mentor in Ashish Nehra, who advised him on injury management and how to focus on recovery while working hard.
Future Prospects
Brar has gained recognition for his height and pace, becoming a regular in India A squads and taking 12 wickets in three matches. With BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar voicing confidence in his potential, strong performances could see Brar make a mark in the national team amidst a thin pace-bowling lineup.
