Introduction of New Captain
On December 15, 2023, the Mumbai Indians (MI) named Hardik Pandya as the successor to Rohit Sharma, designating him as the franchise’s captain for the upcoming 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season and beyond. At the time, the decision seemed justified as Rohit was not delivering the same performance as before, and MI had gone three seasons without a title. In contrast, Hardik had achieved significant success with the Gujarat Titans, leading them to an IPL championship in 2022 and a runner-up finish the following year.
Mixed Results from the Change
However, three seasons on, not much has changed. In fact, MI’s reputation has greatly suffered after experiencing two dismal seasons recently. Former Indian cricketers Murali Kartik and Manoj Tiwary do not believe bringing Hardik back was the right choice. As MI fights against the Lucknow Super Giants to avoid finishing at the bottom for the second time in three years, the question remains: did Hardik’s return hinder more than help? Kartik believes so.
Concerns About Team Dynamics
Kartik remarked on Cricbuzz that removing a captain like Rohit, who has won five titles for MI and the T20 World Cup, was bound to cause issues. The retained players included Rohit, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav; all leaders in their own right. Introducing someone from outside was likely to disrupt the team atmosphere, particularly after a significant loss to the Kolkata Knight Riders.
Players’ Reactions and Future Prospects
He expressed concern that the decision might have shocked players, emphasizing that a player of Rohit’s stature should have been consulted first, especially since he had just won a World Cup. Hardik’s leadership statistics show a gradual decline, winning only 15 out of 38 matches, with a win percentage of 39.47%, the lowest among MI captains with over 10 matches in charge. With other leadership candidates like Suryakumar and Bumrah available, it’s suggested that Hardik’s reappointment may not have been well-received in the locker room.
Feelings of Disappointment for Rohit
Rohit, still a key figure for MI, has often seemed troubled this season. Tiwary notes Rohit’s evident disappointment, given he built the team after taking up the captaincy in 2013 and led them to five IPL titles in nine seasons. He firmly believes that removing Rohit was a poor decision and anticipates a change in captaincy as MI aims to rebuild.
Anticipating Changes Ahead
Tiwary highlighted Rohit’s decline over the past three years, noting that if he were still in charge, certain decisions wouldn’t have transpired. The team’s expectations have diminished, as evidenced by their position in the points table. Tiwary predicts a new captain next season, potentially Suryakumar Yadav, considering his impressive record. However, this is contingent on whether Rohit himself wishes to continue as captain.
