Story Headed to Injured List
ATLANTA — Shortstop Trevor Story is heading to the injured list due to a sports hernia amid a challenging start for the Boston Red Sox this season. The 33-year-old is considering surgery as he consults with team doctors for a second opinion on the severity of the injury and whether rest would be more effective.
Seeking the Best Solution
“We’re trying to gather as much information as possible so we don’t rush into a decision,” Story explained. He acknowledged that surgery is not an ideal outcome, noting, “It’s important to navigate this process carefully with the information we have.” He mentioned that if surgery is necessary, recovery could take six to ten weeks.
Injury Background
The issue began in spring training, initially perceived as groin tightness. Story has attempted to play through it, missing three games, including Friday’s loss to the Atlanta Braves. Recent tests confirmed the diagnosis of a sports hernia.
Persistent Struggles
“It started with groin discomfort and then spread to my hamstring and abdomen,” Story said. He noted the frustrating nature of the injury, which he didn’t immediately associate with a sports hernia. “It didn’t happen due to one specific event; it developed after a few intense days during spring training,” he added.
Red Sox Roster Changes
The Red Sox have recalled infielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester to fill Story’s spot on the roster. Sogard, who has 61 games of experience with the Red Sox, was performing well in Worcester with a .269 average and an .871 OPS. Additionally, Andruw Monasterio has started at shortstop and is expected to receive significant playing time in that position.
Potential Shift for Mayer
While Marcelo Mayer has been playing at second base, the team may consider moving him back to shortstop depending on the duration of Story’s absence. Interim manager Chad Tracy acknowledged that they are contemplating this move but emphasized the need for further information about Story’s condition first.
Update on Other Injuries
In addition to Story’s situation, the Red Sox received positive news regarding outfielder Roman Anthony, who began throwing for the first time since injuring his wrist on May 3. Meanwhile, starter Garrett Crochet is progressing from shoulder inflammation and will take steps towards returning to game action soon.
