Israel’s Defense Support to UAE Amid Iran War
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel has deployed Iron Dome anti-missile systems and military personnel to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to bolster its defense during the ongoing Iran war, according to the U.S. ambassador to Israel. This highlights an increasing defense collaboration between Israel and the UAE, both of which view Iran with suspicion, especially as a fragile ceasefire persists in the conflict.
Significance of the Deployment
This marked Israel’s first publicly recognized military deployment to the UAE, a federation of seven emirates that includes major cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai. While the narrow Strait of Hormuz remains strategically significant and under Iranian control, recent negotiations between the U.S. and Iran seem stalled, increasing the chances of renewed conflict. Amid this backdrop, U.S. President Donald Trump is visiting China for a summit, where Iran is expected to be a topic of discussion, given Beijing’s historical purchase of Iranian oil amidst sanctions.
Huckabee’s Remarks in Israel
During an event in Tel Aviv, U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee expressed gratitude towards the UAE as the first signatory of the Abraham Accords, citing the benefits of Israel’s military assistance. “Israel just sent them Iron Dome batteries and personnel to help operate them,” Huckabee stated, emphasizing the strengthening ties between the nations.
UAE’s Diplomatic Relations with Israel
The UAE officially recognized Israel in 2020, which faced backlash from Iran, Israel’s primary rival in the region. Iran has historically suggested that Israel has a military and intelligence presence in the UAE, although it did not respond immediately to Huckabee’s comments.
Strengthening of UAE’s Defense
Responses from the UAE and Israel regarding Huckabee’s comments have yet to surface. However, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. previously echoed similar sentiments, indicating a possible coordinated release of this information. Despite a ceasefire, the UAE has endured missile and drone attacks from Iran, as it seeks to reassure investors and the public about its safety. The UAE has also taken measures to close down Iranian-affiliated businesses within its borders during the ongoing conflict.
Prospects for Broader Recognition
Huckabee expressed optimism that other nations in the region may soon join the Abraham Accords, a diplomatic agreement establishing relations with Israel, which also includes Bahrain. Nevertheless, many Arab countries are upset by Israel’s military actions following Hamas’ attack in 2023, leading to significant destruction in Gaza and broader conflicts in the region.
Bahrain’s Sentences for Iran-Related Charges
In a related development, Bahrain reported that at least two dozen individuals received prison sentences on charges including espionage and collaboration with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. This includes three life sentences, highlighting intensified scrutiny and action against perceived Iranian influence, particularly as allegations of espionage have risen during the ongoing war.
