Seoul, South Korea —
Kim Jong Un Honors Fallen Soldiers
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un expressed deep sorrow for soldiers who lost their lives while fighting alongside Russia in the Ukraine conflict, marking a rare acknowledgment of military casualties.
Ceremony in Pyongyang
During a ceremony in Pyongyang, Kim met with commanders from a unit that participated in Russia’s military efforts in the Kursk region. He referred to these soldiers as a “heroic army,” and state media images depicted him awarding commendation badges to their uniforms.
Tributes to Deceased Soldiers
Images shared by the state media also displayed Kim pinning badges on photos of deceased soldiers, which were arranged on a wall, each with their name inscribed in gold below their images.
Emotional Reflections
Kim remarked, “My heart aches and is bitter as I face the reality that I only get to meet the noble figures who gave up their precious lives for great victory and glory through photos on the memorial wall,” according to the North Korean news outlet KCNA.
Interaction with Bereaved Families
The event was marked by tears, with Kim comforting grieving family members who were seen mourning and paying respects to the fallen soldiers’ images. Photographs captured Kim embracing tearful children and soldiers.
North Korea’s Military Support to Russia
Since last year, North Korea has dispatched numerous troops and military gear to support Russia’s war efforts, following high-profile meetings between Kim and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Although both nations initially denied confirming troop deployments, they have since admitted to the involvement of North Korean forces.
Casualties and Future Plans
While both countries have maintained silence on reports of heavy losses among North Korean soldiers, Kim’s recent remarks indicate an acknowledgment of the significant impact regarding military casualties. Recent intelligence suggests there are approximately 12,000 North Korean troops in Russia, with reports estimating that about 4,000 of them have been killed or wounded.
