NASCAR Driver Kyle Busch’s Health Crisis Before Death
CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Kyle Busch, the NASCAR driver, suffered shortness of breath, overheating, and was coughing up blood the day before his untimely death, as revealed in a 911 call obtained by The Associated Press.
Busch passed away on Thursday at the age of 41. Although no official cause of death has been disclosed, his family previously reported that he had been hospitalized due to a “severe illness” just days before he was to compete in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
According to sources, Busch became unresponsive while testing in the Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord on Wednesday and was subsequently taken to a Charlotte hospital.
During an emergency call made from the General Motors training facility, an unidentified caller calmly reported to dispatch about Busch’s condition, stating, “I’ve got an individual that’s (got) shortness of breath, very hot, thinks he’s going to pass out, and is producing a little bit of blood, coughing up some blood.” The call confirmed that Busch was awake while lying on the bathroom floor.
Legacy and Reactions
NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell addressed the media on Friday, choosing not to discuss the cause of death or any health issues Busch may have experienced, citing respect for the family’s request for privacy. He emphasized Busch’s significant legacy and described him as “an American badass,” sharing anecdotes about their past interactions.
The motorsports community was left reeling, especially during a busy racing weekend that included the Indianapolis 500. The NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes paid tribute to Busch with a moment of silence at their game that evening.
Richard Childress Racing announced they would suspend operations of Busch’s No. 8 Cup Series car until his young son, Brexton, is old enough to race. The somber atmosphere at the track, marked by gloomy skies, felt appropriate for honoring Busch’s memory as tributes poured in, highlighting his remarkable career with 234 wins across NASCAR’s three national series.
