Understanding Training Camp Roster Battles
Training camp roster contests are largely an illusion. By the conclusion of the first week of free agency, a team’s roster is mostly determined, with final details typically resolved by the end of the NFL Draft. The notion that an unknown player can unexpectedly secure a spot on an NFL roster is primarily a construct of the media. Teams are generally aware of their personnel and tend to stick with their established roster.
Packers’ Offensive Line Outlook
However, competition does occur, and if you pay attention, you can spot when teams initiate these battles. The Green Bay Packers appear to have created a competitive scenario within their offensive line.
The Current Lineup
The core of the Packers’ offensive line is largely finalized, with six positions nearly secured. The starting lineup from left to right features Jordan Morgan, Aaron Banks, Sean Rhyan, Anthony Belton, and Zach Tom, with Darian Kinnard serving as the swing tackle and occasional tight end. Unless an injury occurs, there shouldn’t be much debate on this lineup. Even the addition of 2026 draft selection Jager Burton wouldn’t raise eyebrows for being a seventh roster lock.
Key Roster Spots Available
This leaves at least two, possibly three, available spots. It’s clear where the Packers intend for the competition to unfold.
Candidates for the Roster
Returning to vie for a spot are hybrid guard/tackle Donovan Jennings and 2025 draft pick John Williams. Also in the mix is Travis Glover, primarily a tackle who returns after a back injury kept him out of the 2025 season. Jacob Monk, a true interior lineman, will compete alongside undrafted free agents Josh Gesky from Illinois and Dillon Wade from Auburn.
Analysis of the Candidates
Amongst other prospects, the real contest centers on Monk, Gesky, and Wade. Monk is a familiar face after his time in the Packers’ system. Gesky brings a solid background from the University of Illinois, starting 34 of 47 games during his college years, while Wade, who began his college career at Tulsa before transferring to Auburn, started 37 games over three seasons and brings a versatile skill set.
Evaluating Their Futures
The interior prospects of the Packers, aside from Jager Burton, seem evenly matched, meaning the decision will likely reflect the narrative the Packers want to create. If Jennings and Monk are seen as the top choices, it may hinge on experience versus potential. With Gesky and Wade offering four years of team control and greater upside, they may be viewed as more promising options for long-term development.
The Importance of Narrative
Ultimately, this competition will come down to the story the Packers choose to endorse. If all players are considered to have similar skills, the perception and narrative surrounding them are likely to influence the outcome significantly. Stories, whether authentic or imagined, can profoundly impact decisions.
