The cricket world often needs reminding of Pat Cummins’ remarkable talent in fast bowling. However, his skills as a captain tend to be overshadowed. Despite the focus on his playing abilities, his tactical acumen as a captain is equally noteworthy.
It’s important to recognize that Cummins’ roles as both bowler and captain are closely linked. In the current IPL climate, even a score of 264 can feel vulnerable, and Cummins’ aggressive captaincy has changed the game. His first season leading the IPL in 2024 set a new tone. Who could forget his motivational words, stating: “Teams are scared to face us, and we need to overwhelm others from the moment they step onto the field”?
After a challenging campaign in 2025, SRH has turned its fortunes around this season, reaching the playoffs again. Cummins rejoined the team mid-season after recovering from an injury, yet SRH maintained its intense style under interim captain Ishan Kishan, a philosophy initially instilled by Cummins.
In an exclusive interview with TimesofIndia.com during the New Balance Grey Days 2026 event in Noida, Cummins discussed his captaincy approach, the team’s philosophy, and insights into the evolving demands of T20 cricket.
Strong Season for SRH
Reflecting on his return, Cummins shared: “It’s been fantastic so far. Joining mid-season has presented a fresh experience, but I’m thrilled to be back. The team is performing exceptionally well with strong contributions from everyone.”
Seamless Leadership Transition
When asked about stepping in for Ishan Kishan, he stated: “Ishan is a phenomenal captain and a great presence. I allowed him to lead for the first seven games, and the transition was effortless thanks to our supportive coaching staff.”
Redefining T20 Cricket
Cummins emphasized the necessity of a distinctive approach in T20: “With 10 teams in the competition, aiming for mediocrity won’t suffice. Players like Abhishek (Sharma) and Ishan (Kishan) should not be limited in their batting styles; they should be encouraged to play to their strengths.”
The Reality of Bowling
Commenting on the altered landscape for bowlers, he noted: “Today’s pitches offer little support; bowlers must adapt to this new normal. Batters are becoming more aggressive, challenging bowlers to rethink their strategies.”
Managing Workload
Cummins acknowledged the increasing trend of players resting to prevent chronic injuries, stating, “Despite playing continuously, I’ve ensured to rest occasionally. With a busy year ahead, maintaining fitness is crucial.”
Life Beyond Cricket
Discussing family balance amid travel, Cummins remarked: “It’s challenging, but we’ve created wonderful memories. My four-year-old has visited nearly 20 countries, and we’ve mastered the art of packing for our adventures.”
